THE AUSTIN SESSIONS

WINDS OF CHANGE

A native of Bryan, Texas, Johnny graduated from Texas A&M with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. He later earned a Secondary eaching Certificate from Sam Houston State University. Johnny gave 21 years of his life to this country proudly serving in the United States Air Force as a pilot and officer.

He served two tours in Vietnam where he flew B-52's and C-130's. A decorated officer with Four Clusters to the Air Medal and the distinguished Flying Cross, he has served as a ROTC instructor at Southwest Texas State (now Texas State) and at the Officer Training School at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Johnny retired as a lieutenant colonel and devoted his life fully to the Country Music that he has always been involved with. Through all of this, he has managed to keep the Nu-Notes going strong for well over 30years. Johnny is the former owner of the Melody Ranch in Waco, Texas and has owned the Texas Hall of Fame in Bryan, Texas since 1978.Thirty years ago when the Texas Country Music Scene was abundant in talent and copious in spirit, legendary artists and aspiring young singers could be seen and heard in a variety of venues. These Honky-Tonks were alive with animated enthusiasts and Country aficionados.

Places like the Skyline Club, Dessau Hall, The Broken Spoke, The Rocking M and the Gils Club were but a few of the renowed establishments in which Texas Country thrived. Johnny Lyon is a man that understands and respects this storied history - a man who has lived within this history and around the Texas Country Music Culture for many years.

The consummate professional performer, Johnny has entertained thousands of Country Music fans with brilliant renditions of the True Country Classics. With the same band he formed in high school - the Country Nu-Notes- Johnny is still hitting the road, playing in and around Texas, helping to keep the classic country sound alive in a commercial world that sometimes seems destined to forget its roots. A commercial world from which many celebrated Honky-Tonks have long since faded as the sound of Popular Country Music becomes more and more pasteurized.

Thankfully, there are still artists who, like Johnny Lyon and the Country Nu-Notes, are determined to continue the important, articulate and unique message that Country Western Music was founded upon. In the traditions of pioneers like Bob Wills, Hank Williams, Ray Price, Willie Nelson, Lefty Frizzell and George Jones, these artists are striving to tell and re-tell purely American stores despite an ever-increasing, fad-driven, consumer culture.
